Just recently I realized that there is a confusion even among experienced professional regarding the information to be filled on Maui County Grading Check List. According to Item 20.08.31 of Maui Code about Erosion Control, grading permit is not required for subsurface excavations and backfill for buildings and structures permitted under regular building permit. It means that the cubic yards of soil needed to be excavated for footings do not need to be reflected on Grading Check List for grading permit application.

Additionally, ground excavations and backfill for septic systems permitted by the state health department are also exempted from grading permit check list calculations.
